Lavender has quickly become one of my favorite oils. I love it’s versatility. From face, hair and skin care products, it’s in about everything that touches me. I’ve even added it to my washing powder, hand soaps, and use it regularly in my diffuser. I find that when I’m using an oil my body needs, that sometimes doesn’t always agree with my sense of smell – lavender is there to bring out the best qualities of the alternate oil. Whether I’m combining it with an earthy aroma or citrus – it really helps me connect with my senses.
The other day a fellow Young Living distributor asked the question, what 5 oils would you take on a trip, if you could only take 5? Lavender would be in that group without question. If you aren’t currently using lavender, I encourage you to check out your reference guide, or message me for some solutions on implementing it in your life.
Have a great day!
Bring the sunlight inside, clean the air, or create a relaxing spa-like atmosphere before bedtime. Young Living’s diffusers provide a method to simply and effectively disperse essential oils in to the air, and eliminate the need for many chemical filled household products.
With several models to choose from, our most popular model, the Home Diffuser, it is available alone or comes free with our Premium Starter Kit (you can upgrade to the Bamboo diffuser for a small fee). With its rose-inspired design, ultrasonic technology breaks any mixture of essential oils and water into millions of microparticles, disperses them into the air, and activates the powerful plant constituents found in Young Living essential oils. Custom designed with ambient light control, and alternating 30-second on/off and continuous run settings, Young Living’s Home Diffuser can transform any space into a spa-like atmosphere.
Today I’m bringing the sunshine in with Lemon and Peppermint. The combination is great for brightening the mood and focusing my mind on work.
The Bamboo Diffuser pictured above, utilizes ultrasonic technology to break up the mixture of essential oils and water into extremely fine micro-particles and disperses the ingredients in essential oils into the air. It provides an excellent method of calming and moisturizing to build a healthy, natural, and pure living environment. It also features an LED light, and timer settings for 1 or 4 hours of continuous diffusion. The diffused molecules cover up to 30 square meters with this model. Perfect for our transitional family spaces.
Purchased alone, many of our diffusers include single oils. The real bargain is part of the Premium Starter Kit, where you’ll receive 11 oils and several samples, with access to wholesale purchasing.
Feel free to contact me for details. If you already own your diffuser and kit, enjoy some of these great oily combinations.

Today I hosted the team for an Everyday Oils discussion and Make & Take workshop. We had so much fun creating, that we’re going to have to schedule a Part 2, soon! Check out the set-up:
Since we are all Premium Starter Kit owners, we began our discussion with the Everyday Oils Collection. As we moved in to sharing how we currently use the oils in our life, I shared the benefits of always having the Essential Oil Pocket Reference (EOPR) handy. Members of the Dose of Joy team all receive their choice of the EOPR or Essential Oil Guide App, as part of their team education and oil training.
Next we discussed oils that pertain directly to our individual needs, how to cross reference our research, access upline team resources, and create products to incorporate those oils and begin to eliminate many of the costly, chemical free products in our homes. Armed with information, links, and resources on how to begin examining our individual health and wellness – we moved on to creating products.
Around the room I had Make & Take stations set up, to pull ingredients from, discuss, and as our schedule allowed, we would create products with items in the picture.
A variety of recipes were provided, but where possible, I shared the base recipe and how to modify it for their personal needs. A great example was our detox salt baths. After learning more about the oils, I asked each member to select a blend that best suit their need, and we created a Detox Salt Bath Take Away. I explained the benefits of this method of bathing, and shared simple ways to modify that recipe. Today we created a Himalayan Detox blend, with their essential oils.
I also wanted to highlight the simplicity of making big changes. With just a few products, you can create cost effective solutions, and change a variety of products out in your home all at once. Hand sanitizers, hand soap, dish soap, body wash, various sugar scrubs are all made with the ingredients above, combined with our choice of essential oils.
This was my favorite station of the day, because it provided a fun, energizing drink and break for us all. Process one orange for every ounce of NingXia Red in the vitamix, and allow it to chill in the fridge. Add 10-12 ice cubes, put back on the Vitamix and run until smooth.
I gave each guest their own NingXia Nitro, and gave them the option of adding it direct, or doing a quick shot. Consensus: mixing it in, made it FABULOUS!!! I also took this opportunity to share how simple it was to add in your daily oils at this point.
As we continued, we discussed the versatility of many ingredients we use. While reviewing the recipes, I demonstrated how you can easily create up to three bases at the same time, with similar ingredients in different measurements. The end products can result in a salve, balm or bar consistency. Adding essential oils before the base is cooled, will provide the wellness support or target the needs you are looking to support. (Chest rub, muscle rub, intense moisturizing relief salve, lotion bars, and lip balms).
Everyone left with support materials, recipes, and a couple gift bags full of make & take goodies. We are already talking about scheduling a follow-up. I can’t wait!
And if this wasn’t enough, after everyone left, I went to return calls and emails and was able to close out my day by adding another team member. I can’t wait to share these gifts with her, and introduce her to the team!
Together we grow in knowledge, support and wellness.
Dose of Joy.

My husband and I are hard-core DIYers. We closed on our new construction home on Halloween 2005, and have barely stopped remodeling, since. Currently, we are in the process of installing wood flooring on the second story of our home, as well as trimming out windows and updating trim. In the process, we decided it was finally time to address an increasingly wobbly newel post that had become a growing concern in our home.
We have an 11 year old son with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy, Autism & Epilepsy. So he relies heavily on the railing in our home to support his weight to go up and down the stairs. It wasn’t a complete surprise that this was getting loose, it just seemed a little soon. Then again, he’s a big kid, at 5’2″, and nearly 100# he’s holding his own these days. Shocking since he was barely a pound at birth, and is still fed via g-tube today (my superhero). But still, this rail is fastened by iron posts all the way down the line.
Then, the other night my husband questioned it, as he was working his way down the hall, and measuring for a new section of flooring. We both assumed the reason would be from a stripped screw or hole. Imagine our surprise when he opened up the space and discovered this:
Each side of the newel has two holes drilled. The intention is to attach four screws to the studs. As you can see below, our newel only only two screws that made it in to the studs, and two passed outside. SCARY!!!
YIKES!!! Two newels were found like this, so far (out of 5, one is fine). This is one of those moments when I’m so thankful we caught it when we did. PLEASE, if you have shaky newel, check it out or have a professional in if you aren’t comfortable. Here’s my little disclaimer, my husband grew up on a farm and has years of experience fixing/repairing things. Make sure this is taken care of by someone who knows what they are doing, your family’s safety depends on it.
My husband has to reset a total of 5 newels, and will reset approximately 50 feet of iron spindles before he’s corrected the misalignment. The upside, is when this is complete, our railing will finally be in true alignment with our wall. While this wasn’t obvious when we had carpet, installing wood meant a significant angle cut as he approached the railing base.
Before it’s all said and done, the wood railings and newels will be re-stained in a Black Java Gel Stain by General Finishes to offset from the new hand scraped, Mahogany wood flooring.
Here are a few previews of our project in progress.

This past weekend I was invited to a team educational workshop, where Pamela Hunter shared how she implements the 6 steps in her new book, “Rise & Shine: 6 Master Steps to Get Moving”. I posted an Amazon link in the right column, so that you can check it out. The book is incredible, and if ever you get the chance to take a workshop with Pam, I highly encourage it. You can see the available list of events at our team site, Joyful Healing Oils. Be sure to mention that Katra at Dose Of Joy referred you.
So, back to the stinky business of dirty laundry. I had to start with something pleasant, because Laundry is just gross, right? I have several friends that have been making their own Laundry Detergent for a while, and curiosity finally got the best of me.
I know, I know… My not-so-crunchy friends are probably thinking, Katra – seriously?! But honestly, I’m here to tell you, I made probably close to a years worth of laundry soap in 10min for around $25. That’s right budget busters – TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS! See ya later Gain! Add in the $20 for 6 Wool Dryer Balls, and we bid our fair wells to Downy, too. I’m probably saving over $200/year on such a little change.
This change didn’t come lightly. We have a serious case of the Hard Water Henries out here, I’m not kidding. Before adding the water softener, I used to clean my counters with steel wool, and the only way to get the build up off fixtures was with CLR. So you can imagine what it takes, even with a softener, to brighten our whites above the fifty shades of gray the water has left behind.
So, after a bit of research, trial, and modification, I fell in love with this recipe. My whites are bright, our towels are fluffy and more absorbent, and the boys’ colored clothes are clean and free from their stinky smells. I cringe just thinking about the money (and chemicals) I have been sending down the drain all these years on something so simple.
Here’s the breakdown:
- 1 Box Arm & Hammer Baking Super Washing Soap 3 lb. 7 oz. ($3.97)
- 1 Box of Borax 4 lbs 12 oz. size ($3.97)
- 1 Box of Pure Baking Soda 4 lb. ($2.49)
- 1 container of Oxo Brite 3.6 lb ($9.98)
- 1 1/4 bars of ZOTE* Laundry Bar Soap 14.1 oz. ($0.97 x 1.25 = $1.21), store remainder for spot/pre-treating stains
- 1 Bar Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap* ($3.49), I prefer Lavender or Citrus Orange – not pictured above.
- 40 drops of your favorite essential oils or blend of oils. I used Lavender & Lemon. You’re making a LOT of soap here, so don’t stress about the oil.
- TOOLS: Food Processor recommended (grating wheel and fine processing blade), VERY large stainless bowl or 5gal bucket lined with thick garbage bag, cutting board, knife, large wooden or stainless spoon, 2-4 gallon glass jar for storage (mine is an Anchor Hocking from Amazon, they can also be found at Target or Wal-Mart).
Let’s get started. THE SOAP! I know most recipes out there call for Fels Naptha, but I can’t handle the smell, it was terrible. I also love that ZOTE has very few ingredients, it takes the guesswork out. Combined with my favorite Dr. Bronner’s scent, and a bit of Essential Oils, the combination is just right.
Step 1: Before grating the bar soap, make sure you cut up the blocks in to pieces that will fit in to your food processor chute. The soap is incredibly easy to cut, so don’t worry. It doesn’t matter what order you grate the soaps in, everything will be blended up together in the end.
Step 2: Once the bar soaps are grated, remove all of the soap, exchange the grating wheel for the fine processing blades. Return 1/3 of the soap to the bowl along with a small scoop of Laundry Powder. This prevents soap from sticking to the blades. Process, and add more soap and powder as needed until the entire batch has been well processed.
Step 3: Place all ingredients in large bowl or 5gal bucket lined with a thick plastic bag. Mix ingredients well with a spoon. You may need to toss the ingredients well a couple of times to prevent significant layering.
Step 4: Pour mixed ingredients in to glass jar for storage. Scoop out 1-2Tbl to use. I’m a laundry procrastinator, so I have to use 2Tbl almost always. I did have to pop out my HE Wet Ingredient cup before using. Check your manual for powder use instructions.
Step 5: I purchased 6 dryer balls which cut back significantly on dryer time and also helps fluff the clothes (significantly = 1/3, and since we have a gas dryer – let’s say it – savings, WOOHOO!!). You use 3 dryer balls for small-medium loads, and 6 for large – which means I always use 6. Again, laundry procrastinator! The first time I used them I added a few lemon & lavender oil drops to each and let them sit before tossing them in.
I hope you enjoy this Laundry Soap recipe as much as I have. Feel free to leave a comment below, or send me a message through our contact page. If you have any questions on where to purchase your essential oils, I am happy to help.
